Based on the principles of Dr Maria Montessori (1870-1952) whose holistic vision of education focuses on the cognitive, social, emotional and physical needs of the child. Dr Montessori was the first person to recognise the importance of the early years. She came to realise that children were capable of extraordinary independence and developmental growth; when allowed to follow their own interests and to explore real-world concepts through hands-on learning at their own pace.
There is a great sense of community within the Montessori classroom, where children of differing ages work together in an atmosphere of co-operation rather than competitiveness. There is respect for the environment and for the individuals within it, which comes through experience of freedom within the community.
